"As an architectural designer, I’m passionate about working with clients to transform their dreams into reality."
~ Elizabeth Hurtado, Assoc. AIA
At the heart of my work is a commitment to designing homes that are not only beautiful but also in harmony with the natural environment. I collaborate closely with clients, ensuring that every aspect of the design reflects your values and vision. From initial concept sketches to detailed construction drawings, my goal is to make the process seamless and enjoyable.
My passion for sustainable building was shaped by early experiences in my grandmother’s house in Colombia, a solid masonry home built in the 1930s, with thick, plastered clay brick walls that made me feel safe. That sense of permanence and security stuck with me, inspiring my dedication to creating homes that stand the test of time.
If you're considering building with earth blocks or are curious about how these materials can work for your project, I’m here to offer clear, reliable advice based on my knowledge and experience. I’d love to explore the possibilities with you.
My Abuela's House, built between 1931 and 1933 in the 'Historical Eclecticism' style, constructed with low-fired clay brick and a reinforced concrete framework.
With over 7 years of architectural design experience, I have had the privilege of working on a diverse range of projects, from innovative earth block homes to conventional wood-frame designs. My journey began in 2005 with a Master of Fine Arts from The University of North Texas, where I taught art and design for over 15 years. This artistic foundation deeply influences my architectural approach, allowing me to integrate creativity and thoughtful design into every project.
In 2017, I earned a Master of Architecture from The University of Texas at Arlington. During my studies, I worked with a group of fellow students to explore earthen architecture in one of our design studios. Collaborating with geotechnical and engineering students, we analyzed soil composition, conducted compression tests, and operated an AECT earth block machine. This hands-on experience was a turning point in my career, sparking my passion for earth block construction.
After graduating, I had the opportunity to work remotely with Colorado Earth LLC (now Nova Terra), where I gained invaluable experience in earth block design. It was a rewarding partnership, and we still collaborate occasionally on select projects. As I’ve always been based in Texas, my focus now is on applying what I’ve learned to projects here and in the surrounding areas, bringing the benefits of earth block construction to this region.
Building with earth blocks requires a deep understanding of the materials, and I’m here to offer you solid, practical advice every step of the way. Whether you’re drawn to earth blocks for their sustainability, safety, or because you want a chemical-free living environment, I’ll help you navigate the process with confidence.
As both an artist and architectural designer, I approach each project with a balance of creativity and functionality. A home should not only meet your needs but also feel like a place you truly belong. By using materials like earth blocks, we can create spaces that are healthy, efficient, and built to last.
Let’s work together to create a home that honors the beauty of natural materials, resonates with your values, and stands the test of time, both for you and for future generations.
